Lakesha Burton Assistant Chief Jacksonville Sheriff's Office An extraordinary leader, community citizen and advocate, Assistant Chief Lakesha Burton is a 20+ year veteran of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. She holds the distinctions of having been the 4th African American female to obtain the rank of police sergeant, the 2nd African American female to earn the rank of police lieutenant. The First Female Executive Director of the Police Athletic League of Jacksonville, 501 c (3) youth serving organization since its creation 45 years ago. She now serves as only the 4th African American female police Assistant Chief in over 190 years of law enforcement in Duval County . She currently leads the Community Engagement Section of JSO, which consist of 7 different units.
After receiving a basketball scholarship to college, she later earned a scholarship to the University of Central Florida where she later graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Criminology. Her Masters in Criminology is from Florida Metropolitan University. Hired by the JSO in 1999, Lakesha quickly established herself as one of Jacksonville’s finest on and off of the job. She has worked in everything from patrol and community affairs, to recruiting, the detectives’ division and the field training unit, to name a few. She is widely known for her advocacy in helping persons in need, especially underprivileged children. She’s also known for using her voice to empower both girls and women locally, nationally and internationally. Her commitment to the community is demonstrated by her selfless contributions to the various boards she is a part of such as the Delores Barr Weaver Policy Center Leadership Council, City of Jacksonville Safety & Crime Reduction Committee, Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation, Police Athletic League of Jacksonville, Read USA Incorporated, Retreaded Advisory and the American Heart Association First Coast Health Equity Committee. Honored for her outstanding achievements many times, the most recent she was a nominee for the Jacksonville Image Awards. Other achievements to include, a Lifetime Achievement Award- Resolution 2017-363-A, City of Jacksonville, Leading Lady Honoree, Harry Connick Jr TV Show – HARRY, Citizen Diplomat of the year- Global Jax., Officer of HOPE Award, American Civility Association, Victim’s Advocate of the year, Grand Marshal of the Puerto Rican & Hispanic parade, Woman of Distinction, Girl Scouts of Gateway Council, 2017 Eve Finalist, Florida Times-Union and more. Lakesha is a lifetime member of Hopewell Church. She is married to Assistant Chief Gregory Burton, and has five children and five grandchildren. |
Greg Burton Chief Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Greg Burton is a native of Shreveport, Louisiana. He attended Southern University in Baton Rouge and was later commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army, until he was honorable discharged in 1993. Greg moved to Jacksonville in 1990 where he later attended Edward Waters College and culminated his education at Jacksonville University receiving a Master of Education degree.
Greg joined the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office in 1994 as a police officer. During his 26 years with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, Greg has worked in various positions as a police officer, sergeant, lieutenant and chief. Greg has served on the administrative staffs of former Sheriff and now Congressman John Rutherford, and the current Sheriff, Mike William. Chief Burton retired in 2020 and currently enjoys his life serving the community and traveling with his wife Lakesha. Greg has many hobbies, archery, golf and reading, but his greatest pleasure comes from helping others. He is an active member of the Jacksonville community, where serves in various organizations and on several non-profit boards, most notably,
